When I reached the end of the sample, I kept swiping - alas, in vain - to load more text. Already, in that first chapter or two, I had gotten so involved in the story that I wanted to find out what happened next. As the story opens, the youngest child, an infant son, has recently died, and the mother's narration has a somber tone. As it ends, her husband will be accepting an opportunity to move to Philadelphia to work with a relative in the mortuary business. No one knows yet that the Spanish Flu pandemic is just about to reach American shores.

As a fan of the historical genre, I would love a chance to read this in its entirety although I did wonder, based on the sample, if I might end up feeling oddly depressed after finishing it.
