The prose is enchanting and lovely, if not a little heavy handed on the descriptors in the first couple of sentences. On the whole, the first passage evokes strength born of sorrow, and that premise would make me want to read more. It’s a little disconcerting to begin a book with a child’s death, but I have read Susan Meissner’s work before and she writes with an air of enchantment in the every day. Very sure I need to own this book.
