As usual, Susan Meissner's latest historical fiction novel appears to set the scene for an intriguing and rich read. We know the main character, Pauline, has lost her infant son recently, and no longer feels the need to remain in her hometown. Death has changed her. I find Meissner's writing to be very evocative, with lines like "I don’t want the girls to end up mirroring this life of mine, in a place where nothing truly changes but the contours of your heart." I suspect Pauline will change in many many ways over the course of the novel.
