Special thank you to St. Martin’s Press for gifting me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I was sent this novel as a result of winning a BookishFirst giveaway.

“When money and morality intersect, the results can illuminate intriguing truths about human character. People are motivated to break their moral compasses for a variety of primal reasons: survival, hate, love, envy, passion. And money.”

“The intellect does not reign supreme in matters of the heart.”

Twenty-eight-year-old Jess is drawn from her simple life back home to the bustling city life in New York, where she is a freelance makeup artist for BeautyBuzz. Struggling to make ends meet and to provide for her family back home, often unbeknownst to them, Jess does whatever she can to secure a little extra cash here and there. Seizing an opportunity to make an easy extra $500, Jess agrees to participate in a psychological survey of sorts for the mysterious Dr. Shields. As Jess takes on the role of Subject 52, she begins to question everything about her life and her decisions, suddenly finding herself in the midst of a game of cat and mouse like no other.

This book is my favorite book of the year so far, hands down. I devoured this in just a few short days, and just couldn’t stop until I saw how this story would eventually play out. Psychological thrillers are some of my favorites to read, as long as they aren’t too predictable, and this one definitely had me guessing until the final chapter. It was fantastic and so very well-written. This one is most definitely fit for the big screen, and will certainly be all the rave in 2019 when it is released.

5 stars, and then some!
