“Almost Home” is a throwback to simpler times and places. Set in rural Blackberry Springs, Alabama in a boarding house in the midst of WWII, readers are drawn into the lives of ordinary people who find themselves dealing with struggles and sorrows not unlike the ones we face in 2019. Marital relationships, family complications, financial struggles, male/female roles, the place of religion in one’s life, and even PTSD for returning soldiers and their loved ones - - this book has it all. And then mix in an old-time legend about river pirates and hidden loot, and you have a pretty decent tale.

Yes, the characters are pretty much one-dimensional. The bad guys are very apparent and the good guys (and gals!) may be struggling, but you know things will work out nicely in the end. There is some gentle humor, a little flashback violence, some mild suggestions of sex, some snakes (human and reptilian), and a fair amount of religion, but all are what one would expect in rural Alabama in the 1940s. This is a good natured book with multiple happy endings and nary a cuss word in sight. So what if you can see the ending coming a mile away? It is still a nice journey to get there.
