"Almost home" is a warm hearted novel that follows the story of Dolly Chandler (and her husband) and the people who come to stay at her place during the period of WWII.

In the beginning I felt a little bit confused by the amount of characters and their representation in the story, however, throughout the book I was slowly getting attached to them as I dived into their background and understood more their motivation and struggles. Personally I enjoyed the interaction between Reed and Daisy - I found their relationship so genuine and honest.

This historical fiction is a slow read and, at the same time, fast-paced: the storyline around the young bride (Catherine O'Dwyer) who lived in Dolly's house a century before was so engaging, though I had to slow down myself because I wanted to savor every emotion portrayed by the author.

Valerie writes beautifully and approaches daily themes such as family, marriage, friendship and PTSD - all of these with a pinch of mystery. Lastly, I have to say that the ending was just PERFECT! I highly recommend "Almost home" and this book won't by my last read from this author.
