Almost Home is a book that touches your heart. In 1944 Dolly and Si Chandler have opened their home in Blackberry Spring, Alabama as a boarding house in order to cover their taxes. People have come from around the country to find work in a nearby munitions factory and they bring their problems with them, but Dolly’s home cooking and welcoming smile bring them together like family.

Jesse and Anne are in danger of losing their farm and dealing with his feelings of failure. There are a couple of unemployed college professors and Daisy, a war widow who feels that she failed her husband when she sold their farm. They are later joined by Reed, a wounded veteran who suffers both physically and with PTSD. When Dolly and Si suffer a tragedy of their own, it is their adopted family who provide the support that they need.

Valerie Fraser Luesse also provides a mystery in the history of Dolly’s home. Built by a river pirate who posed as a successful businessman, he married the local pastor’s daughter. Shortly after their wedding the couple disappeared, possibly leaving behind a treasure that was never found.

When I started reading this book I found it difficult to put down. As Dolly and Si’s boarders bond, they draw the reader into their group. This is a story of family and healing that I would highly recommend. I would like to thank Bookish First for providing a copy of this book for my honest review.
