During the depression and years afterwards, people and their families often had to give up their homes and land and move to areas where there were jobs and opportunities.
In rural Georgia near Birmingham, Dolly and her husband Si took in borders to help them get through the effects of the depressions years. Hard work plus southern hospitality made their home inventing to people who needed a place to stay while passing through or until they could make their way back home.
With various personalities and skills, Dolly and Si rented rooms to individuals or couples. Some people or couples fitted in to their lifestyle and others didn't, but they needed the rental income to keep their land and home.
The Williams just arrived at the house, a young married couple from Illinois who left their farm and land which had been in the family for generations but was no longer able to provide a living for them. Showing her southern hospitality, Dolly welcomed the couple to her home. The wife was relieved to find a comfortable and inviting place to settle for a while, but the husband was bitter and holding a grudge(s). The couple settles into their room, and the story continues......
