Autumn Allen’s parallel stories in her debut All You Have to Do sets up a compelling narrative conversation that had me eager to follow Gibran and Kevin in each of these moments of protest. Placing the 1995 Million Man March alongside the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. sets off a dialogue about organizing, race, expectation, and history. I felt invested in both character’s story’s immediately, and while I wondered how Allen would manage these two stories together, the opening chapters assured me that I am in fantastic hands. All You Have to Do feels like a must read and I cannot wait to experience the entirety of this story.
