Emily Giffin is a master author. She knows exactly what and how to write to draw the reader in and keep them hooked until the last page.
This read was different than anything I’ve read about an assault, especially since the ending is completely unexpected yet it should be based on similar, REAL, situations.
Tom’s daughter, Lyla, is assaulted by Nina’s son, Finch. But it’s complicated. Lyla is in love with Finch, and Finch can’t be lying about what happened because he’s a “good kid”, read: wealthy, white, influential family.
Even though Lyla is the victim, we see Nina’s morals tested more than most of the characters. This intertwining stories are all consuming and while the ending is bitter sweet, it’s a really important story especially in the age of #metoo -another thing I love about EG is how relevant her story is; she wrote this before #metoo was even officially a thing.
