Thank you Joanna Goodman for creating an historical fiction masterpiece. I could not put this book down once I started. I felt the pain of Maggie, Elodie, and Gabriel. The setting is Montreal and surroundings. Goodman explores a time when orphanages were turned into mental hospitals in the 1950’s and orphans were forced to live as mental patients. This story brings to life what it was like to be a teenage mother forced to give up her baby at birth. This is one family’s story. At times, it was difficult to read the pain that each character suffered. This book is my bookclub’s choice for July, and I cannot wait for our discussion. I will be pondering over this book for a long time and passing this book along to friends.
