Nina and Kirk Browning are part of the “in” crowd in Nashville, a group that includes those with plenty of money to throw around to different charities. Their only son Finch has just gotten accepted at Princeton, so everything seems to be going well for them. But an undercurrent of sorts is hinted at, leading the reader to believe that all is not as good as it seems on the surface. The scene switches to the home of Tom and Lyla. Tom is a single father and Lyla is a sophomore at the very upscale private school, Windsor. Lyla insists that she is going to her friend Grace’s house to study, but when Tom receives a phone call from Grace in the wee hours of the morning concerning Lyla’ s inebriation, Tom rushes to Grace’s house to rescue his drunk daughter. Again, all seems okay on the surface...just a little drinking by teens. But Lyla hints that she cannot remember what happened at the party. And so the stage is set for a dramatic tale of families whose lives are forever changed in one night.
