Sometimes I find myself reading a book that I wouldn’t normally have found myself. A book that, if I heard it described, I wouldn’t even realize that I’d love it. I owe all the credit in the world to BookishFirst for introducing me to this book. I read an excerpt and I was immediately pulled into the story. Unfortunately I didn’t win the book which meant that I had to wait till it was actually released to read it. I’m so glad I found it, it was amazing.

If you hear the description and think maybe it’s not for you, read an excerpt somewhere and see if the same thing happens to you.

This book was heavy and dealt with some very dark issues that I normally shy away from reading about. But none of them were done in excessive detail and I’m grateful for that.

Now, on to the story.
Sal (I’m sticking with the shortened version of his name or I’ll have to change it on autocorrect) and Noor met when they were little children.
This story tells their story and also Sal’s mother’s story which starts in Pakistan.

Sal’s mother has just died. She meant the world to Sal and also to Noor. She loved. Or like she was her own daughter. When she dies, she mentions forgiveness. Noor sees it as asking Noor to forgive Sal after their big fight. They haven’t talked in the past year,
Noor immediately allows Sal back into her life and offers him all the support that she can.
Sal is in so far over his head. His dad is an alcoholic and they are very close to losing the motel that his mother poured her love into. He’s also upset because his mom might have lived if she’d had the time or money to treat her illness.
Noor wants nothing more than to get into a good college very far away and to leave. But her controlling uncle forbids it. She felt indebted to him for so long because he literally saved her life when she was a child in Pakistan. He wound up raising her and blaming her for ruining his life.

As Sal and Noor reconnect he makes some decisions that could forever impact the future of both of their lives.

I know these are fictional characters but my heart just hurt for them. I so badly wished for happy endings for them.

What a story. I’m so glad I read it.
