Even with the trigger warnings in the front of the book (they’re well done, look because this book doesn’t pull punches) I wasn’t ready for quite how hard this book kicked me in the feelings. I’m not saying I didn’t like it, I did very much and think this is a book more people should read. But it covers a lot and most of it is dark. The story is told in three parts the first is about Misbah and takes place in the past starting in Pakistan. The second is her son Salahudin or Sal. The third is Sal’s best friend Noor. All three of them are going through difficult times and faced with hard choices. Misbah is sick with kidney issues with no insurance or money for treatments. Sal is trying to save the Inn his mother dreamed of running while his father has dived back into a bottle. Noor is desperate to make something more of her life than working in her uncle’s liquor store and determined to make it into college. This story weaves across time and lives and was just beautiful, even if it made me cry more than a little.
