Five star book alert! I loved this book from Sabaa Tahir. I am a big fan of her Ember in the Ashes fantasy series, and I was eager to read a contemporary story by her. I was not disappointed at all!

This story and these characters are going to stay with me for a very long time. The characters felt so real and genuine, and I felt deeply all of their pain and struggles. This feels like a very personal story for Tahir and that adds a depth and genuineness to these characters. I loved Salahudin and Noor so much. Their life was so very different than my life growing up as a white girl in America, and I appreciate being able to see the world through their eyes and understand their point of view. I would be happy if Tahir wanted to write a sequel so that I could keep reading about them!

This is a story about Pakistani immigrants and their life in America. It’s a tough read and deals with some difficult subjects, like grief and abuse, but it was also just lovely and honest and beautiful. I did not want it to end!
