The book opens up from the perspective of Misbah who is 18 and about to be married to a man she's never met. She wants to beg her father to have her mother reconsider the arrangement, but says nothing. Just hoping the man will treat her well.

My heart broke reading just the first page. I can tell this book is going to be impactful. Usually contemporary writings aren't my go-to, but this seems like one I'm already enthralled with.

We go on to meet Sal who is in the car with his drunk father. They discus an appointment for Sal's Abu. Sal not hesitating to state that he will be going so someone coherent could speak to the doctor, unlike his drunk father.

Sal seems like he's fed up with his father and his girlfriend who we go on to meet, he even goes to the bathroom to get away from her. He seems stressed, which is understandable considering it seems he already has so much to deal with at his home with a sick mother and father who drinks. Not to mention some complicated relationships he seems to have with people at his school.

Noor is an acquaintance of Sal, one who confessed having feelings for him which he cruelty rejected. Noor works at her uncle's liquor store, recieving a happy birthday text from Misbah. Misbah is revealed to be Sal's mother. Noor also seems to have many conflicting feelings within her. She's been through a lot from what she's said. I am rooting for her.

I really like the writing style in this and the way the character's narrate. Sometimes I find it hard to get into books with certain writing styles but that is not the case here and I am thrilled.
