There’s a reason this book won the National Book Award. It’s just that good. I read this book a little over a month ago when it was a chosen for my monthly book club pick, but I had to sit with it for a bit. First and foremost this book is HEAVY. Told in three points of view and two timelines, we follow Pakistani Americans Sal, Noor, and Misbah, as they simply try to live in world that seems set up for their suffering. While there is a strong plot, I would also categorize this as a character driven book. I would also goes so far as to say this lands beyond the scope of traditional young adult media. While the characters are in their late teens the subject matter and themes would appeal to a wide audience.

If you can, I highly recommend listening to this on audio as well. Hearing the Pakistani phrases spoken by a native speaker was so impactful. It makes a book like this so much more personal.
