This book is amazing, an absolute emotional rollercoaster. This book tells the story of 2 couples, Misbah and Toufiq a Pakistani couple who immigrated to the US, and Noor and Salahudin, two high school students living in the Saluhudin is the son of Misbah and Toufiq and everything starts to spin out of control after Misbash dies and Toufiq turns to alcohol leaving Salahudin to pick up the pieces. This powerful story really punches you in the gut from the very first page, within its pages there is no hiding from the ugly parts of family life. Within all of this there is also a powerful love story. Sabaa is a master storyteller and really captures the essence of bigotry in small town America, even in if is reflexive rather than intentional. Sabaa manages to masterfully balance the emotions within the story to create something that absolutely rips you to two whilst also showing great love and compassion.
