Laura tells the story of growing up with 2 loving parents, only to discover her father is gay.
Ralph and Irene meet in 1941 and continue their love story until Irene's death, however Irene discovers that Ralph is gay and has been hiding it from her and his 4 children. I didn't know what to expect from this memoir, but it shows how Ralph tried to be happy in his choice with his wife and kids and Irene supported and loved him. Laura had some difficulties before she even knew about her father's secret. From night terrors anxiety and migraines. Worrying about her father leaving one day and never returning and believing that all men are unfaithful. All the things that Laura can look back on now that points to what in this time we stereotypically think of as gay behavior, but back in the 50's and 60's never knowing that this isn't how a dad should act. I love the prospective her granddaughter Cassie gave her about gay men in the time of her Papa. I'm not ashamed to say I cried. Irene truly loved Ralph and although Ralph didn't feel the exact same way for her, he did love her.
