There are several stories out there about the lived experience of an LGBTQ individual; however rarely do we get a story that is told from the viewpoint of a family member. Affliction is a memoir by Laura Hall where she details her childhood with a closeted father. Hall beautifully shares stories of her naivety around a father who didn’t fit the standard masculine societal roles. Hall’s father loved interior design and flower arranging, but at the end of the day it didn’t matter because he was a present, engaged, and loving father. That was all that mattered.
Hall provides the reader with a genuine retelling of her father’s coming out experience, as well as his personal transformation of living an open, authentic life as a queer man. It’s an absolutely beautiful story told from the viewpoint of someone who loves him so dearly. I found the book incredible moving and would highly recommend.
