I don’t even know where to start with talking about this book. I picked this up yesterday during the rainy, tropical storm, perfect reading weather day and COULD NOT put it down. I was immediately hooked!

I know people have been saying this is Gossip Girl meets Get Out...I would add that it has some Pretty Little Liars vibes. But also, The Outsiders? When I was student teaching middle school ELA like 5 years ago I taught The Outsiders (if you haven’t read it...do it!) and I could absolutely see this being The Outsiders for the next generation. People could (should!) learn from this book!

This book is heartbreaking, thought-provoking, infuriating...a stunning debut of a novel. It ended up hitting me way deeper than I was expecting, but I’m so glad for it! It’s not the easiest book to read, but it’s worth it! I love Chiamaka and Devon, and so badly wanted better for them, but appreciate how this book ended. Those two come from very different backgrounds and families, but deep down want the same things. To succeed, to make their families proud, to belong.

I loved it and can guarantee I will be thinking about it for a LONG time. Also, she wrote this AS A COLLEGE STUDENT! I will buy everything she writes for the rest of time.

Do I need to be reading more dark academia??
