Considering that this was a debut novel I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. This book was so well written and the split perspectives with Chiamaka and Devon was done perfectly. Even though they came from such different backgrounds they came together to face this evil that is Niveus and the “social eugenics” that went on inside of the school. The tension was built up so well leading to tons of mini cliffhangers at the ends of each chapter. Forcing you to keep reading so that you know what happens next.
Reading this as someone who has never had to deal with the struggles that come with being a black person just living in society today was eye opening. The oppression and missed opportunities that people of color have to live with is awful. But I never realized just how awful it truly was. It sickens me to think that there are places like Niveus still around today, in a world where so much change has happened it just doesn’t seem right. This book is a huge step in the right direction, and I personally can’t wait to read the next book that Ms. Àbíke-Íyímídé writes.
