The beautiful, unique cover is the first thing that immediately grabbed my attention. Then I started reading the book and was instantly pulled in.

Chiamaka and Devon are the only Black students at Niveus Academy. They are complete opposites. Chiamaka is popular, from a wealthy family, and lives on the side of town with the immaculate houses, white picket fences, and black iron gates. Devon lives on the "wrong" side of town, his father went to prison when he was a kid, and he is only able to attend Niveus because of his scholarship. Despite their social status at school, both are Senior Prefects. But they quickly become targets of the mysterious Aces.

What drew me in was the writing style. Everything flowed naturally and nothing felt forced or far-fetched. I am from a different background than both characters but they still felt relatable. I was pulled into the mystery and thrill of uncovering who was behind Aces.

I have a feeling Ace of Spades will be on many top lists this year and I look forward to reading more from Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé!
