ACE OF SPADES by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé follows two high school seniors at Niveus Private Academy. Devon and Chiamaka are very different. Devon is a musician who mostly tries to fly under the radar. Chiamaka has been the head girl throughout her high school experience, working her friendships and other relationships to always come out on top of the popularity contests. The one thing they have in common is that they are the only two Black kids in the entire school.

When someone known only as “Aces” begins to dish out Devon’s and Chiamaka’s secrets, their high school careers and their personal lives are put on the rocks. The secrets they have to spill become more and more dangerous and soon their lives are out of control. They haven’t had much to do with each other in the past, but now they only have each other to rely on.

I went into this book after having several friends talk about how good it was, so my expectations were high. It was the first book I thought of when I needed a book with a school setting, though I was a little apprehensive about whether the book could measure up to the hype. I needn’t have feared! This book is absolutely fantastic and it kept me hooked throughout. I mistrusted nearly everyone and kept changing my guesses as to who was behind everything that was going on. Still, the book managed to surprise me at several turns!

This is billed as having strong Gossip Girl vibes and it absolutely does have that general sense, but with an even darker undertone and a lot of layers of social commentary layered on. I think the author did an amazing job of balancing plot and character and commentary and I can’t wait to see what they produce in the future!

I think this is one that you don’t want to know too much about before going into it, but trust me, you do want to go into it! I’m sure you’ll be hooked as well!
