Thank you so much to Bookish First for hosting this giveaway for Ace of Spades!

Ace of Spades is a very dark thriller, darker than I thought it would be. We’re introduced to Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, beginning their senior year of high school at the prestigious Niveus Private Academy. As the only two Black students, they often feel alone among a sea of white faces. Both Devon and Chiamaka have big plans for themselves though; she to become a doctor, he to attend Juilliard.

Just a few days into school, a mysterious person by the name of Aces starts sending cryptic text messages that seemingly single out Devon and Chiamaka. Both are hiding secrets that cannot get out; their future plans could be destroyed instantly. But who is Aces, and what is their endgame?

I loved the flow of the story. It starts with Devon and ends with Chiamaka, alternating between the two every other chapter. We really get to know each student. While they are both Black, they are vastly different. Chiamaka has money, designer shoes, and her own car, while Devon lives on the other side of the tracks, so to speak, shares a bed with his two younger brothers, and has only his musical talents to rely on (aka a scholarship) to help him get into the school of his dreams.

Full of nail biting suspense and back stabbing friends, you’ll be shocked at just how deeply embedded Aces is inside of Niveus. Ace of Spades tackles homophobia, racism, classism, and more between its pages. Everyone has a secret to hide, but how far are they willing to go to protect it?
