Did I enjoy this book? No--it is a seriously messed up story. Did I NEED to finish this book to find out what in the world was going on? Absolutely yes. This is a story about gaslighting, and racism, and the structures of racism. I was expecting for some reason--maybe because of the cover? that this was a fantasy book, but it is not--I would definitely put this in the thriller category. The villains seem almost unbelievably villainous at first, but as the story goes on, they become more and more believable and realistic.

The story follows two main characters, Devon, who is on the outskirts of the social scene at his private school full of rich students, and Chiamaka, who at the top of the school hierarchy, who both are blackmailed into having their secrets revealed by a Pretty Little Liars-esque set of notes. Because they both have things to hide, they start to work together to unmask this "Ace of Spades."
