This book was fantastic. It provided an interesting and thrilling mystery but also included themes that are not usually presented in mystery books- mostly that of “privilege.”

This theme of privilege plays out in different ways in this book. Initially, the reader is presented with privilege as it relates to finances - as the main characters are a scholarship kid (Devon) from the wrong side of town, and a very rich girl who only wears designer clothes (Chiamaka).

As the story begins to play out, other privileges start to rise to the surface that bring about other themes to the book including friendships, sexuality, and most importantly - race.

Without giving away too many spoilers… all I can say is that race plays a big part in this book. Race is presented in a way that shows regardless of your income, sexuality, networking skills, etc., you may still be attacked (emotionally, physically, etc.) because of your race. This theme forces the reader to think about their own privilege (whether it be race related, finance related, etc.) - which is especially important in this turbulent time in the world right now.

Outside of the deep themes this book presents, it also presents a very thrilling and suspenseful mystery that is reminiscent of recent block-buster movies, including “Get Out.” This fast-paced novel keeps the reader guessing and gasping at each plot twist.

While at times it seems as if there are almost too many supporting characters, you do come to realize that each supporting character adds a new layer to the main characters’ personalities and experience within this private school.

All in all, it was a great read with a thrilling plot and themes that encourage the reader to think about the injustices in the world.
