Ace of Spades is an emotional roller coaster of a book: it’s a bit slow at the start but there’s sense of *something* coming and once the big event happens the ending is a rush of emotion that goes by way too quickly.

I had a hard time getting into this book because there’s quiet a few characters thrown at you and it’s tough to differentiate them and their relationship to the main characters. Speaking of main characters: the two in this book have these flashbacks and you can tell something happened that is haunting them, but it isn’t revealed right away what that is. This makes the reader feel intentionally left-out which, personally, I hate. Plus, the beginning doesn’t feel very unique or creative. I was left thinking this is just a copy of Gossip Girl. Boy, was I wrong.

The middle and end of the book pick up really quickly and transforms from GG to GG meets Get Out; which is a super interesting and really heart-wrenching dynamic. By this point you already know all the characters, you know the backstory, and you are all set to just enjoy the ride. Although, enjoy is a tough word to use because the story is really dark and brutal.

I truly enjoyed the last half of this book a lot more than the first half. I couldn’t figure out how the book was going to end and the emotional ride I went on to get to the big reveal was shocking. There are millions of plot twists along the way that make the book 100% better. This book was so much fun to read, I’m really happy I stuck with it and gave it the chance it deserved.
