I really liked the setting immediately. It gave me "Special Topic in Calamity Physics" vibes, one of my favorite books published recently. The main character, Devon, especially reminded me of Marisha Pessl's protagonist as well, as the outsider looking in to the secret world of prefects that he is suddenly invited and thrust into. It will be interesting to see if the rest of that book can carry that same atmosphere.
The cover is also intense and gives a sense of urgency to the plot, underlining the thriller/suspense genre. I also love how it mimics a playing card, a hidden pun on the title.
