A Tempest of Tea invites readers into a world where 1920s Victorian London collides with elements of Peaky Blinders' intrigue and a dash of vampiric lore. Hafsah Faizal crafts a tale that's equal parts heist narrative and character-driven drama.

The strength of this book lies in its witty dialogue and heist-driven narrative. Every other sentence had me either chuckling or marveling at the characters' audacity. The writing truly shines in the banter-filled exchanges.

While the characters are undeniably strong, I didn’t feel as connected to them as I anticipated, especially for a story centered on a heist. Typically, the found family aspects of a crew draw me in, but I didn’t quite feel that here. Despite their fierceness, I yearned for a deeper emotional bond. Arthie Casimir, the protagonist, fueled by a desire for revenge against colonial oppressors, is a formidable force. Her dynamic with Jin, her steadfast companion, adds a layer of humanity to the fantastical elements of the narrative.

While the plot promises thrilling action and intricate schemes, the pacing occasionally falters, with moments of slow buildup followed by bursts of intense activity. However, Faizal's writing style keeps the narrative engaging, drawing readers deeper into the richly detailed world of Spindrift, a tearoom hiding dark secrets beneath its genteel facade.

The romance woven throughout the story adds an extra layer of tension and intrigue, though at times it veers into familiar territory, detracting from the overall urgency of the plot. Nevertheless, the chemistry between the characters is palpable for those that need a little romance with their reads.

Overall, A Tempest of Tea is a captivating blend of historical fantasy and heist thriller, with complex characters and atmospheric settings that will transport readers to a world where danger lurks around every corner. If you're looking for a gripping tale filled with twists, turns, and wit, this book is sure to satisfy your cravings for adventure and intrigue.
