First Look gives Water for Elephant vibes

The first chapter of this book gave me some serious Water for Elephants vibes, what with the assisted living center setting and the reminder of the stories hidden within our elders. However, based on the synopsis of this novel, it will take a very different turn, fixating on the granddaughter of the assisted living patron to tell her story. I find the premise very intriguing and wish I would have been able to see that plot develop more in this first look. I think it sounds very interesting but I don't feel like I've read enough to make a solid judgment on the plot.
