I knew I had to pick this one up after reading and loving Malinda Lo's first novel. I loved learning more about the history of queer San Francisco. Although this one does take place in the future, it does reference sons of the characters from her first novel. I enjoyed that parallel but you could definitely read them independently without being lost. This story was definitely hard hitting for multiple reasons. The relationship between Aria and her grandmother was endearing. Less than ideal circumstances brought them together for the summer. Aria quickly learns how awesome her Grandparent's lives were. She even draws parallels to her own life while exploring her grandmother's photography. Aria's time in San Francisco was drastically changed when she decides to explore her sexyality. I loved thus coming of she story and highly recommend both of thus authors books!
