Malinda Lo is an artist of imagery in the A Scatter of Light excerpt. The reader can easily imagine the gallery and the women who meander at the wire sculpture. Lo captures the adolescent heart of wanting to appear older, by giving us a gentle reminder and nostalgia of the various facades youth put on to seem more mature.

Aria's grandmother is a local well known artist in the Bay Area who takes her granddaughter with her to an art gallery. There Aria gets an intimate look into who her grandmother really is outside the title 'grandma.' It's in these moments that Aria realizes that her grandmother is just more than one title, and she finds pride in calling her grandmother by her first name because then it connects her directly to who she is as a person.

"it seemed inadequate to call her by a name that said nothing about her accomplishments." at that moment I knew that this was going to be a book about more than just a party gone wrong.

"as if they were trying their hardest to hold the world together with their bare hands." 12 pages in and I'm already crying, this is a beautiful book.
