I like the juxtaposition between the main character's east coast upbringing and the relaxed, artistic California community she is "exiled" to for the summer. The hint that her grandma's memory/mental awareness is declining promises to bring an added dimension to their relationship, and I'm interested to see how the granddaughter takes that in as she likely will start seeing it for herself.
