YA fantasy isn't my go-to. There have been YA fantasies that I've greatly enjoyed, but I've learned I need to be very picky about reading books for this age range. If you unequivocally enjoy YA fantasy, you'll get more out of this than I did. The setup is good - I enjoyed the races of humanoids, the battle royale for the crown was super promising, there were hints of queer rep. I found the followup lacking. It felt like Eva's romantic interests dominated the second half of the book, and certain plotlines felt trope-y. I was really looking forward to reading a North African inspired fantasy, but this world felt like it could be set in generic Euro fantasy land without changing anything. Nothing about this book was horrendous. It was just very forgettable.
