Wow, what a cool world! The magical kingdom of Myre is somewhat like North Africa, except with fae, native horned and winged khimaer, and blood-drinking bloodkin. Princess Eva and her sister Isa are fated to battle each other with magic when Eva comes of age, but Eva has never had control of her magick, a dangerous magic of blood and marrow. The majority of the story focuses on Eva learning how to use and control her magick - I loved how the magic manifests, and how her lessons with Bacchus, immortal lord of the hunt, are mingled with lessons of her country's history and mythology. A handsome khimaer prince also teaches Eva how to fight, and Eva finds herself increasingly attracted to him. There was a lot to like here, but I found the plot to be lacking. We don't get much characterization of Eva's sister Isa, or much focus on her at all. There were plenty of dramatic moments, but they happened too quickly to feel the full weight of them. I loved this world and the author's writing style is perfect, but I just wanted more of it!
