Thank you Celadon Books and author M.T. Edvardsson for this free copy of A Nearly Normal Family, in exchange for an honest review.

This story is told in first person from 3 different points of view; the father, the daughter, and the mother. You get a clear story from each person about how the trial and events leading up to it all came together.

A Nearly Normal Family starts off in Adam’s point of view. He’s outside the courtroom waiting to give his testimony and has a flashback to memories of his daughter, his wife, and life events. We get an understanding of his faith and why he wants his family to be viewed a certain way. There’s something very naive about Adam. He acts as if his daughter would never experiment with drugs or lie about who she’s with. He’s surprised to know some of the things Stella has done. Yet, Adam shows what a father would do to protect his daughter.
Now we get a look through Stella’s perspective. Flashbacks to a young child who looked up to her dad, to a rebellious teenager, and now an 18 year old, accused of murder, sitting in a jail cell. She seems so angry, so lost. Stella is the type of girl who would do something to make a point, whether that be good or bad. She acts on impulse and only she knows what happened that night.

And finally, we’re in the courtroom waiting for her daughter’s trial to begin, Ulrika is a bundle of nerves. In part 3 everything unfolds from a lawyer’s viewpoint, but she’s also a mother first and foremost. Her guilt from not always being around for her family weighs heavy on her and Ulrika takes this opportunity to help her daughter. But if Ulrika is to help her, Stella won’t be the only one keeping secrets.

When I received this bookmail I was hooked right away. I was a little intimidated by the book because it was translated from swedish, this is only the 2nd translated book that I remember reading. I was hesitant and I wasnt sure if it would hold my interest. There’s so many differences between Sweden and America, from legal drinking age to the way the law works. I liked the way this book was written, it flowed well. I enjoyed being able to read the story from each person’s perspective, without it being repetitive. Some books leave you guessing and questioning the end; this book did not. The ending, for me, was perfect.
