I zipped through this book really quickly and enjoyed it greatly. I am a huge thriller fan (it’s 90% of what I read) and I love twists and turns with big WTF moments. This book was a little different in that while it was definitely suspenseful and kept me guessing and wanting to know more, for me, there was no major “omg I can’t believe that just happened” moment. I would classify this book more as mystery rather than thriller, but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying it. While some parts were surprising reveals, it was all logical and flowed seamlessly even though chapters skipped around from past to present. It was very easy to follow the order of events. The reveal at the end was clever and I enjoyed the little twist.

The book was split up into 3 parts, first the point of view of the father of the family who is a pastor. Second, the point of view of the teenage girl who’s a bit rebellious and dramatic. The last part is from the point of view of the mother who is a clever lawyer. Each part has its own tone and does seem like its written from a different character, although I felt the mother was the least developed character even though you get the most information in her part since she closes out the novel. Similarly, I felt the father was the most developed character even though his part is more background information and not where the bulk of the action happens.

It’s interesting to see how events are replayed differently from each person’s point of view which just brings home the fact that 1. You never truly know someone, even you’re own family and 2. Experiences are completely subjective even if two people experience something together, they each take something different from the situation and see events in a different light.

This book kept me guessing about where I thought the story would go and how it would end, but it also kept me thinking about the larger theme of family and what one would go through to protect their family. At the end, I was left with some questions about what some characters really knew, what character’s true intentions were, etc. but I think the author intentionally leaves those questions hanging to leave open the chance for dialogue, theories and imagination without spelling everything out.

Easy 5 out 5 stars and I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.
