A Multitude of Dreams is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's short story, "The Masque of the Red Death". I haven't read Poe's story so don't have much basis for comparison. A Multitude of Dreams is set in a fantasy world which feels like our Middle Ages and occurs four years after a bloody plague has ravaged the land. The story is told through two POVs. Seraphina, a young Jewish girl, is masquerading as the deceased Princess Imogen, and is locked in a castle with the royal family and nobility. Nico is a young gentleman who survived the plague due to his rare immunity and is now servant to a Lord who took him in after his family perished. Their paths meet when the Lord sends Nico to check on the royal family. The story is predictable but well written and moves fluidly; there are a few unexpected twists. I liked the Jewish representation which is rare in fantasy. The world building was sometimes vague. A Multitude of Dreams is a dark, suspenseful, enjoyable YA fantasy with a gothic atmosphere.
