The set up of the plot was intriguing enough to make me want to keep reading but it is not good enough to put at the top of my TBR.
The prose tends to alternate between simplistic and needlessly complicated. I feel that it needed another round of editing to smooth out some awkward sentence structure as well as word choices. In particular, the use of 'man-blush' drew me right out of the story and made me wince.
There were also various anachronisms in Nico's chapter when he was talking about medicine that also drew me out of the story. I think the author forgot this was a medieval setting.
I do like both Seraphina and Nico as characters. their personalities were set up fairly well in the first few chapters. The background characters however were very flat and one note (the sisters annoyed the crap out of me).
Overall, intriguing but mediocre, doesn't really stand out amongst similar YA novels.
