Interesting but ultimately fell flat

A Multitude of Dreams has an honestly fascinating premise and inspiration - a mad king, a plague that killed thousands, and the juxtaposition of decay and opulence within the castle walls. I was genuinely intrigued by the plot, but found myself start to lose interest as the pacing dragged on. The story itself builds at a steady though slow pace and the ending comes hurtling in to tie up all the loose threads conveniently within a few chapters. I wish I could have at least felt a bit more connected to the characters but the writing was a lot of explanation and straight up telling the audience a play by play and therefore I felt more removed from their story. This had the potential to really lean into the suffocating opulence of the royal family but instead it felt repetitive. However, I did appreciate the creativity with the inspiration of Poe's Masque of the Red Death and the new interpretative way that supernatural creatures were introduced.
