This books takes place in a country in the aftermath of a plague and includes some unexpected horror elements. It's told in dual POVs from a princess being forced to stay at the castle along with the nobility and servants and a gravedigger who lost his entire family in the plague and is on a mission to help other survivors as he slowly realizes the horrors of this new world.
I enjoyed the concept of this book and the unexpected dark elements. It was interesting to try to piece together the supernatural elements of this world as the characters learned bits and pieces. I enjoyed reading about the characters but none of them really stood out to me. The conflicts didn't feel very high stakes, but I think there are some really good moments where suspense was built well. I also liked how the main character was Jewish and had to deal with antisemitism at times. It was interesting to read from her perspective.
