I went into this not knowing that A Multitude of Dreams was based off the Poe's short story. I did not expect that at all and after finding Poe's story to read, I now understand why somethings were written as they were and I understand why Rutherford made the choices she did in building her world.

At times, I did want to put the book down - there are parts that drag. The overall journey though was great. I typically do not like mixed POV, but when it meets in the middle and starts to mesh, it does it really well and it fits with the story.

I love how when I was reading, I got the sense of paranoia from Imogen and her sisters on maintaining the charade they had going on for their senile father. With everyone in the castle a hostage, Rutherford does a great job of hyping up everything. I really thought it was safe outside! That twist just really got me at the end and I can't imagine I was the only one.

A touch too mature for my middle schoolers, I would happily recommend this to upper level secondary. It killed a slow afternoon.
