This book is perfect for young adults and the fantasy world building was wonderful. I absolutely adored the gothic setting. There's this historical feel that really adds to the direness of the situation while also fitting in to the fantasy. This tension was also built from page one with the plague and the staggering ways it has impacted the world. The characters were also deeply developed. The writing was gorgeous and this helped develop all the nuanced details about this world. Her word choice and the flow of her writing made this book so easy to read.

I personally felt that Seraphina's secret was revealed too soon and would have loved to be in suspense about this element for a bit longer. Also, on the topics of reveals, I'm still not sure how I feel about the vampire reveal.

I also really liked how the romance was handled. I find that young adult fantasy books tend to really focus on the romance and often include a love triangle. I liked that in this book the romance played a more minor role in the overall plot.
