A plague that kills in three days with only a few immune and others that turn into something else and a mad king that keeps his daughters and other nobility locked away in a castle for years and years? Definitely a dark but fascinating read that I found hard to put down. I think it was best described by Seraphina when she looked down on the nobility and king waiting for her to descend to her birthday celebration and realized how, even though they were all masked, that they looked like a "multitude of dreams and nightmares...all waiting for her". That was nicely creepy. Also the poem that kept cropping up, all about Mad King Stuart, and how to possibly survive the plague, though the last option seems to cause as many problems as the plague itself, at least for the Immaculates.

I did really like the characters of Seraphina and Nico, ordinary people pushed into awful experiences, one pretending to be a dead princess to keep a mad king appeased, and the other trying to help others and figure out how to stop his Lord from eating everyone. A good book and hard to put down.
