I knew this book was familiar and didn't catch it until the author's note! The spin on Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Masque of Red Death' was so well done and kept me on the edge of my seat. I will say, that although the world itself was incredible, I did struggle to connect with any of the characters. I found myself uninterested in their lived and relationships and thus, didn't care if they got out of the castle or not.

The style of writing was very whimsical, but I almost found myself wishing it was more direct and less beautiful, given the situation that they were in. The pacing was perfect and I didn't feel as though any parts were rushed or dragged out. I did find myself skimming the last 10ish pages, but again, I think that was due to being uninterested in the characters.

I've read a Poison Season by this same author and thought that that book was so well done, so I did have that to compare to this book. I would say that a Poison Season is stronger than this book.
