Bland confusing Fantasy

The cover for A Multitude of Drams is quite fascinating. There are a lot of pretty details to decipher, and I definitely see the Poe references. Unfortunately, the nice cover is pretty much all I like about this book.

The story follows two main characters trying to survive in a post-plague world (sounds interesting right…). There is Seraphina, a Jewish girl posing as a princess and literally locked in a castle and there is Nico, a nice boy working for shady Lord Crane. Let’s start with the characters. They were all so bland, unlikeable, and naive. I was consistently rolling my eyes at the naiveness. There was absolutely no character development. There was a romance aspect which made no sense and felt very forced. And without spoiling the “twist,” the plot should be high stakes, but the characters never act the part. They are literally in mortal danger, and no one seems really concerned.

Next, let’s talk about the world building, or lack thereof. There is no scenic world building, except constant descriptions of the castle. The world didn’t make sense either, as it portrayed as a fantasy world with made up places, yet it had the same religions as our world. It was just very confusing to understand the world the author was going for.

Now, the “twist” is absolutely bonkers, but not in a good way. Everything about the “twist” was poorly written and did not mix well with the plague aspect. It’s like it came out of left field. While the idea for this book is good, I would describe it as a bland read.
