Right from the start, this book was so engaging. I was really enjoying the characters and backstories. And then things took a turn that I did not see coming, which really just makes it that much better! It's pretty rare that a book gives me a jump scare. There were so many tense scenes where this was happening and I just did not see it coming. There was a tagline that compared the style of the book to Poe and I can absolutely agree with that. There is just something so dark and twisty about it. But it also pulls you in and keeps you until the end. There were so many times I found myself gripping this book while reading it! It's definitely a good thing that I got it in hardcover because I think a paperback may have been damaged by the time I was done.

There were definitely romantic elements in this one, but I would say it went a little light on it. I do love a good romance, but with the themes of this story and the darker edge, I actually kind of liked that it went a little light on the romantic side of things. This is definitely a recommended book from me and it's one that I would encourage you to go into with the mindset that nothing is ever as it seems. I will also say I can't think of a better book to read smack in the middle of spooky season. This is probably the least descriptive review I have ever left for a book but I really don't want to give a single thing away because I think you need to enjoy it for yourself. I just want to convey how incredible of a book I feel it is and encourage you to give it a try!
