A Magic Steeped in Poison is a stellar start to an engrossing and dynamic duology — I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel!
There’s so much to love in this novel, from the lovably flawed characters to the action-packed story and the beautifully rendered world-building. In addition, the author’s voice and writing itself is stunning - the prose is polished and lyrical. I highlighted so many passages to return to and appreciate later. This was my first time reading anything by this author, but certainly not my last! I will be back for not only the sequel, but anything Judy I. Lin writes henceforth.
While this book is uniquely its own, I think it will appeal to fans of popular court intrigue fantasy novels like Holly Black’s Cruel Prince series or Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series. Much like those stories, the characters are captivating and the plot keeps you guessing. Lovely from beginning to end!
