A Magic Steeped in Poison proved not to be the book for me. My disappointment is immense, as my expectations were quite high. The premise is intriguing and I did find the beginning to be compelling but, overall, it seemed quite formulaic in nature and I was rather bored by the story. I wanted more depth, more action, and less of the same old YA path.
Ultimately, I’m feeling more and more dissatisfied when it comes to young adult books. I know I’m not the target audience, but I’ve enjoyed so many as an older adult, and now it just feels like everything is the same and incredibly simplified, even when the storyline suggests complexity. So maybe this was a mistake to try, but I’m still holding out hope for another YA gem.
I do think this will suit the younger readers just fine. It does what it’s supposed to do for that age group. It’s just not what I wanted from a book.
